Friday Flutterings

Just trying to make some sense of the small little world we live in.

It has been unseasonably warm the last few days. Two mornings ago, I saw two (separate) men driving in their cars/trucks, and I could tell that they weren't wearing shirts. Now, men not wearing shirts was a common summer thing when I was a kid but for some odd reason, I feel like I don't see it that much anymore. Well, regardless, two days ago, two men, sans shirts, all before 8 am. The thing that alarmed me, however, was that I am still not convinced that those men weren't fully nude. They just looked so . . . naked behind the wheel, that I quickly turned away.

If you are alone (or think you are alone) and you yawn (or sneeze or cough), do you cover your mouth? We, as a society, seem to have forgotten how to lift our arms in such cases.

When did it become impossible to travel any distance in our cars without the dire need for a bottle of water, a travel mug of coffee or our cell phones? When and how did we become so damned needy?

Have a great weekend, all.

1. Those men, David, hmmm... good thing you turned away.
2. Yes, I cover my mouth - it's a matter of self respect for me not to have double standards.
3.I do not travel with water, coffee, or a cell phone. I don't even have a cell phone!!! :-)
4.There's a small challenge for you on my blog. Take a look, if you feel like it.
5.Thank you very much, and a very nice weekend to you too.

Just for the record:

In this town----
No shirts are common. Speedo bathing suits on tourists in the summer ..and shirtless are normal attire for stupid men! (No service in the barber shop unless you put on some shorts or pants and don a shirt)

Covering the mouth...hmmm! How about washing your hands after you clear out your nose.

Now, for the coffee or water. Never see much of that here. In fact I have never seen one person drinking or eating while driving. The telefonino is another thing. I even see it used by bicycle riders.

Don't see shirtless man here, however hot it is. I do cover my mouth when I yawn, mostly because my yawning starts the dog doing it too! I don't drive but I never go anywhere without a small bottle of water - and a book.

1. i like the smirking officer. he's in on a good joke i think.

2. i remember when i was about 13 seeing a man drive down my street shirtless, then he paused to ask me for directions and i saw that he was completely naked and i was very creeped out as he drove away cackling

3. yes, i cover...always.

4. an excellent question. i also want to know why my 16 yr old can't walk out of her room to ask me a question in the kitchen, instead she texts me....good grief!

I am not aware of any shirtless men driving around these parts, but then of course, I am off somewhere in my head. I find it a bit bold to look directly at people. I am sure I am missing out on quite a bit. (fully nude sounds quite unpleasant, imagining sticky vinyl seats. Don't wish to be seeing any of that.)

It is all habit. And with the sneezing and coughing it is always good to cover. We do not cover with our hands though (except for yawning) we cough or sneeze into our shoulder or arm (otherwise you are just spreading germs with your hands.)

The water bottle. Afraid I can not deny that one. Addicted (fill it with tap from home). But in my defense, I do not drink soda, or coffee, and don't like to pay for beverages, esp. water when I am out and about. (and also in my defense, I am a bit neurotic, who knows I could possibly die of thirst if I don't take proper precautions, or just feel like I might.) So yes I am a bit needy. I don't know why or how it happened.
I am not needy with the cell phone though. I use it about once a month. I like that it has everyone's numbers programmed into it, so I don't need to look them up. I scarcely ever have a desire to talk to someone when I am out and about. (if I did, I would ask them to come along)

No shirtless men in cars lately, but there was the guy who opened his door while parked near a grade school to show me his favorite toy.

I didn't know I could still run so fast.

I automatically cover my mouth but feel a bit foolish when I'm alone.

I meant to ask.. is that Robert Guillaume? He continues to be a most charming actor with a distinctive voice.

You're too funny. We don't have a lot of shirtless guys up here in the village, but the closer to the sea you get, of course, the more naked torsos (torsos only!) can be seen.

When alone, I don't usually cover my mouth when I yawn, but I still do when I cough or sneeze--kind of a reflex.

As for the water/coffee, as Sharon said, you don't see much of that here, BUT I have come to taking a bottle of water "just in case." You never know when you could go for hours before finding something open to get even a sip of water around here....

I've tagged you for a writing meme by the way:

5 strengths as a writer

I hope you'll come out and play :)

I think we may live close by as I often see shirtless men, who by every means NEED to be wearing shirts, galavanting around. I am guilty of covering my mouth when sneezing, though not always when yawning. And I am also one of the needy that commutes to work every morning with a mug of java and an obnoxiously large 64 oz jug of water.

Hope you had a great weekend as well!

All, I am reminded from all of your comments what a big, vast world we live in. Even within the United States, it is amazing the differences between places, socities, town, cities, communities. Thank you for the reminder.

Vesper _ No cell phone, huh? Wow. I am very impressed. Thank you for the challenge. It is a tough one.

Sharon _ The bike riders using the cell phone on the street is downright scary.

Welshcakes Limoncello _ Funny/odd the differences in yours and Sharon's response to this.
A bottle of water and a book - what more does one need?

lime _ Oh man, I haven't got to the texting thing yet with my kids. Good grief.

And that is exactly what I am fearing with the shirtless men! That makes me so sad. A young thirteen year old girl doesn't need that kind of "exposure" -- that just makes me sick.

Minx _ I am glad you take it seriously. It is a serious matter, afterall.

Taffiny _ I am with you on the covering -- all a habit for me. Seems odd to make a snap decision -- "oh I am alone so I don't have to cover up" -- all in an effort to waste a bit of arm motion.

And doctors still recommend us drinking 8 bottles of water a day, or something. I am guilty of that third point most definately -- there is always some sort of beverage in my car at any given point.

heartinsanfrancisco_ I am sorry for you but glad you were chosen to see the toy instead of one of the young children who were so close by. That whole flashing thing just boggles my mind. No, silly, that is not Robert Guillaume. He does have a great voice, doesn't he?

sognatrice _ Love to hear about the norm in your part of the world, so thank you. And thank you for the tag, that is quite the challenge, I must admit.

irishkat ) _ Wow, a 64 oz jug of water. Good for you. That's very healthy, isn't it? Whatever gets you through the day!

Hello David, hope you've had a good weekend. I've gone and tagged you! Sorry.

Taffiny said...

oh now I shall tag you too,
tagged by 4 people,
you most certainly are "it".

Or are you standing on some sort of "home base" and thus are "safe", no matter how often we try to tag you?

Verilion _ Thanks you. I'm touched.

Taffiny _ I wish I was "safe" from this tag, as honored as I am to have gotten tagged by you. I'll do it, I swear.
